Dustin Jeffrey is a Boss

Well actually they all were tonight. The entire team played fantastic, but Jeffrey was the hero of the night with his 2 goals, including at overtime game winner. Staal had the other.

It's hard to look back and find too many games that the Pens worked harder than they did today, and they finally were rewarded for their hard work with a 3-2 overtime victory against Boston Saturday night.

Games don't get much more physical than this one. Huge hits dominated the highlight reels all night long, but none better than James Neal destroying Chara in the corner boards midway through the 1st. (It's probably on Youtube by now)

The unsung hero of the game has to be Ben Lovejoy, whose quick stick saved a goal that slipped past Fleury early in the 1st. Then he got down on one knee and showed off his Game 6 Scuderi impression to make a few more saves. If that one goes in, who knows if the Pens would have been able to recover at all.

Kris Letang strapped down his jersey tonight.

Best game I've seen from Rupp in a while. Not only are his fists on top of their game, but his skating was superb tonight. He is playing like he wants to keep his spot when Kunitz comes back.

Talk all you want about James Neal not scoring yet, but anyone who says that he has played poorly probably isn't watching very many games. Neal is not only grinding it out on the forecheck, but he is also distributing the puck quite a bit too. Once he gets a little more comfortable shooting than his production will go right back up.

Normally, I would say that the fact that the Pens gave up another late goal is a problem that needs to be addressed, but we're at the point in the season where 2 points is 2 points no matter which way you get em.

Speaking of which, the Flyers lost today.
The Pens have pulled within 2 points of the Flyers, but I wouldn't get too excited just yet. I am keeping track of the deficit through "potential points," meaning that every game the Flyers have on Pittsburgh is another 2 points they have the opportunity to get.

So right now the deficit is at 8. (2 + 6) If the Pens can get that number below 4 before they play the Flyers twice late in March, then those 2 games become "winner take all" for the division. (and avoiding Washington in the 1st round)

Of course, there is another way to avoid the Caps in the 1st round. Tampa has found themselves in a spot of bother recently, and the Caps have pulled within 1 point of them. I wouldn't be too upset with that first round matchup, with or without a certain center who wears number 87.

But we got 15 more before that. Flyers play a biggie tomorrow against the Rags on NBC prime time, and if they lose than the number drops to 6.

Let's Go Pens.

Pirates @ Phillies 3/5/2011, First Cuts of Spring

Today the Pirates announced that they have reassigned four players to minor league camp. The players are C Tony Sanchez, C Eric Fryer, LHP Donnie Veal, and RHP Cesar Valdez.

Catcher Tony Sanchez was not expected to make the team and only made one Grapefruit League appearance, which came yesterday as a DH against the Phillies.

Eric Fryer was a part of the Eric Hinske trade along with RHP Casey Erickson. Fryer is a pure athlete and his defense is said to be MLB level. His arm is plenty strong, and he has actually spend a substantial time in the outfield.

LHP Donnie Veal is still recovering from Tommy John Surgery and had little chance to make the team.

Cesar Valdez was the return for Zach Duke. He still has options remaining and hasn't been terribly impressive so he could use the time in the minors anyway.

None of these guys was expected to make the team and they need to work with their teammates. Both catchers were sent down as well because there just isn't enough work for them in Major League camp.

1. Andrew McCutchen CF

Pens: Jeffrey up, Injury update, Mustache Boy

update from practice today. -Dustin Jeffrey has been called up again. King Shero already said that he plans to have D.Jeff finish the season in PIT, and that Sunday's demotion was only a paper move for Clear Day.

-Both Paul Martin (upper body) and Tyler Kennedy (lower body) practiced today and are expected to be in the lineup tomorrow night. This probably explains why Vitale and Strait did not come back up with Jeffrey.

-Brent Johnson participated in practice today, but is listed as day-to-day. Theissen has not yet been called up, though, so all signs point to him being ok to back up Fleury tomorrow.

-Chris Kunitz is getting close to being ready to play, but not quite yet. Apparently injuries don't exempt you from the mustache shootout, though, as Kuni will be sporting a 'stache until the end of the regular season.

-Bad news regarding Nick Johnson and Eric Tangradi today, as it doesn't look like they will be seeing much ice time for the rest of the year. This is unrelated to their concussions, because even if they are healthy enough to play they did not make the WBS Clear Day roster and cannot go down for the playoff run.

-I don't really have the desire to think up my own Crosby timetable, so you can find your ridiculous rumors from somewhere else. As far as the real Crosby timetable, there is none yet.

Big game tomorrow.

Let's Go Pens

Yankees @ Pirates 3/1/2011

Today the Pirates take on the villainous, small market hating, New York Yankees at McKechnie Field. Game time is at 1:05.

Lineup:

1. Alex Presley CF
2. John Bowker LF
3. Matt Diaz RF
4. Garrett Jones DH
5. Garrett Atkins 1B
6. Andy Marte 3B
7. Chris Snyder C
8. Josh Rodriguez 2B
9. Pedro Ciriaco SS

That lineup is fringe-city. Half of that lineup could easily not make the team. Interesting note this marks Rodriguez's second start of the season, speedy Corey Wimberly has only started once, and it was as at 2B against the Manatees.

Pitchers:

James McDonald
Aaron Thompson
Daniel McCutchen
Chris Resop
Daniel Moskos
Ramon Aguero

Daniel McCutchen looks to rebound after his three ER performance last time out.

Some bad news out of Pirates camp as well as Joe Beimel was once again shutdown due to soreness in his forearm. He will be getting an MRI in the next few days, but two days of arm pain is never good. The Pirates have no other lefty relievers so this opens up a spot for a young guy like Danny Moskos, or Scott Olsen if he washes out as a starter.

Did Ray Shero Sleep Through His Alarm?

Nope.

In fact, he actually spent the day having a cigar on the patio with Sid talking about all the new wingers he got him.

No need to run up Mario's phone bill any more. Shero has his team.

The rest of the league was pretty quiet too. Caps picked up Wideman and Arnott. Kings got Penner. Dvorak went to Atlanta. Brad Richards stayed put.

Orioles @Pirates/ Pirates @ Rays 2/28/2011 Split Squad

Two games today, each at 1:03.

First we'll go with the Orioles. This is the first time John Russell will see his old team and he will be acting as 3B coach.

Lineup:
1. Jose Tabata LF
2. Josh Rodriguez
3. Andrew McCutchen CF
4. Pedro Alvarez 3B
5. Lyle Overbay 1B
6. Garrett Jones RF
7. Ryan Doumit DH
8. Chase d'Arnaud 2B
9. Jason Jaramillo C

Pitchers:
Paul Maholm
Jeff Karstens
Tyler Yates
Jeff Locke
Mike Crotta
Justin Wilson
Cesar Valdez

I expect Maholm and Karstens to go two, and the rest one. Some decent prospects in that lineup. This is probably the varsity.

Now onto the Rays. The Pirates are looking to take this series after each team split the first two.

Lineup:
1. Gorkys Hernandez CF
2. Ronny Cedeno SS
3. Neil Walker 2B
4. Matt Diaz RF
5. Joshua Fields 3B
6. Garrett Atkins 1B
7. Alex Presley LF
8. Chris Snyder DH
9. Dustin Brown C

Joshua Fields sure is getting a look. This is the all tweener team. Neil Walker must feel odd in that group.

Pitchers:
Bryan Morris
Fernando Nieve
Sean Gallagher
Aaron Thompson
Kyle McPherson

Joe Beimel who left the field before the game started and missed his scheduled opportunity with elbow soreness has no damage and is expected to be fine.

Sunday, February 27, 2011

Ray @ Pirates 2/27/2011

The Pirates host their first Grapefruit League game of Spring Training season today at 1:05. They will try to avenge their loss against the Rays.

Pretty basic lineup again. This is generally what you can expect to see.

1. Jose Tabata LF
2. Neil Walker 2B
3. Andrew McCutchen CF
4. Pedro Alvarez 3B
5. Lyle Overbay 1B
6. Garrett Jones RF
7. Ryan Doumit C
8. Joshua Fields DH
9. Ronny Cedeno SS

Todays pitchers are listed below. Correia and Burres will both go two innings followed by the relievers who are expected to pitch one inning each.

Kevin Correia
Brian Burres
Joel Hanrahan
Joe Beimel
Jose Veras
Tony Watson
Chris Leroux
